Initially the early drawings were an adjunct to the designing of the mirror frames. This was particularly true of the “Pattern” and the “Cross” series. I was trying to work out whether a two dimensional design, drawn onto paper, could be successfully carved onto the wood. Like the mirror frames with their repeat motifs these drawings had the same feeling to them.
But, more recently, I have found the ideas for drawing are now quite separate from those of sculpture. These later drawings are a type of ‘print’ where, sometimes, I have drawn repetitive images with the help of stencils I have made for each particular drawing.
I only draw with a pencil where the graphite is used to build up tones which gives each image a varying degree of depth.
For drawings, in particular, it’s a journey where I am unsure of the destination but I think I know when I have arrived. Possibly.
